Sign up for the Backpacking Weekend, held May 19-21 at Sky Meadows State Park!
We'll leave from the church on Friday late afternoon. We should get to Ashby Gap trail parking off the Appalachian Trail around 5:30pm. We'll hike to our campsite and should get there by 7:00 or 7:30 at the latest, which should give us time to set up our camp before it gets dark. The hike to our campsite is 3.5 miles and we can take our time. It includes going over a ridge with amazing views to the south. The next day, we'll plan some day hikes in which we'll leave most of our gear back at the campsite. We'll probably do a morning and afternoon hike, returning to rest in the middle of the day.
If everyone is too tired, we'll just do one day hike on Saturday and let the Scouts hang out at the campsite for the afternoon, or go to the nearby historic cabin at Sky Meadows. All of our meals will be the backpacking variety. Sunday morning we'll break camp early and hike back to the cars.
This is essentially the same campout we did last June in preparation for Philmont, except for this one we'll take it easier on the day hikes on Saturday, which will make a huge difference in the level of difficulty. It should be a great time!
Fees are $20.
